Call for Proposals: Application Workshops on TEIN4 NetworkTEIN4 Application Workshops Program 2013 – Second PhaseOn behalf of theTEIN4 project, TEIN*CC would like to make a call for proposals to interested individuals or organizations who are willing to collaborate over TEIN4 and its peering networks; to host application workshops aimed at promoting applications on TEIN4 with provision of budget (approx. up 10,000 to Euros per workshop).Information on the TEIN4 network can be found on www.tein4.netThe expected outcome of the workshop is to lead to a concrete collaborative application project to be implemented on TEIN4 in at least 1 of the TEIN4 beneficiaries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam) and candidate countries(Myanmar, Mongolia and etc..). Examples of existing applications using TEIN4 are, among others, projects in the fields of telemedicine and E-learning.Application workshops must meet the following requirements:● New innovative collaborations or enhancements on existing collaborations which can contribute to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)● Collaboration with at least 2 countries with the involvement of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in at least 1 of the aforementioned TEIN4 beneficiaries and candidate countries.● A project development plan for future collaborations should be included in the proposal with a clear time line.● Proposed applications in new application areas as well as proposed enhancements of existing collaborative applications with a potentially significant impact will be given special consideration.● All proposed applications/projects must be non-commercial in nature.● The workshop must be conducted during the course of 2013 while the actual collaborative activities on TEIN4 can commence or be conducted in 2014.● The workshop can be co-located as a satellite event of existing meetings/conferences in the region, such as APAN and TEIN4 NOC Annual Workshops.Applications involving European partners are strongly encouraged.A proposal (not longer than 5 A4 pages) should include the following:● Set of objectives● Expected results● Synopsis program● Post workshop development activity plan● Target audience(s)● Outline budget. Originally envisioned as a mutli-institutional grid, this persistent environment is evolving to a multi-cloud where the executable is a virtual machine instead of an application executable. With partners at AIST (Japan) and NCHC (Taiwan) we have developed semi-automated techniques to convert application-specific virtual machine images to run in multiple cloud hosting infrastructures, including Amazon EC2. VM’s are uploaded to distributed, strongly authenticated, and replicated storage infrastructure based on gFarm and then copied out and translated to local hosting infrastructure. This talk will describe the process, the challenges such as overlay networking, VM control and a path forward to creating usable infrastructure for small groups of collaborating teams. We will walk through two different use models that operate across different cloud infrastructures to illustrate various components.Bio:Dr. Papadopoulos received his PhD in 1993 from UC Santa Barbara in Electrical Engineering. He spent 5 years at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as part of the the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) development team. He came to UCSD as research professor in computer science in 1998 and still holds and adjunct appointment. He is currently the Chief Technology Officer at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). He is the architect of the Triton resource (tritonresource.sdsc.edu) which is a network, storage and memory rich, mid-scale (3000 core) cluster that is also an ongoing experiment in economic sustainability for campus-scale computing.In addition to duties at SDSC, his research interests revolve around distributed, clustered, and cloud-based systems and how they can be used more effectively in an expanding bandwidth-rich environment. Dr. Papadopoulos is a key investigator for key research projects at UCSD including the The National Biomedical Computation Resource(NBCR) and the Pacific Rim Applications and Grid Middlware Assembly (PRAGMA) He is well known for leading the development of the open-source, NSF-funded Rocks Cluster toolkit (OCI-0721623), which has installed base of 1000s of clusters. Rocks (www.rocksclusters.org) is used for both research and production systems with scalability to 1000s of nodes. Our work in Rocks focuses on developing practical, scalable, and robust virtual machine authoring and implementation of hybrid clusters that consist of both real and virtual hardware.
