Bioinformatics is a transformative science that is at the crux of interdisciplinary research, with a pivotal role in the growth of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The field of bioinformatics has grown tremendously in the past decade, with a tremendous potential to be tapped. The high demand for low-cost sequencing has driven the development of high-throughput sequencing, which is also termed as Next generation sequencing (NGS). Thousands or millions of sequences are concurrently produced in the next-generation sequencing process. Next generation sequencing has become a commodity; with the commercialization of various affordable desktop sequencers, NGS will be of reach by more traditional wet-lab biologists. As seen in recent years, genome-wide scale computational analysis is increasingly being used as a backbone to foster novel discovery in biomedical research. However, as the quantities of sequence data increase exponentially, the analysis bottleneck is yet to be solved.

Perdana University - Centre for Bioinformatics (PU-CBi) and Trans Eurasia Information Network (STAR) Cooperation Center (TEIN*CC) are pleased to announce a first joint workshop on NGS, which will be held at Perdana University, Malaysia from 2nd to 4th December 2014. This workshop is open to all TEIN4 member countries (Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam) and travel grants (inclusive of per diem and accommodation) will be provided to selected participants from TEIN4 beneficiary countries (click here for more info). There is no registration fee for this workshop.

The workshop will provide an introduction to data analyses pipeline, tools and resources for genomics and  transcriptomics of next generation sequence data. It will be delivered as a mixture of lectures, hands-on practical sessions and discussions with case studies from life science research.

The main objective of the workshop is to introduce participants to NGS data mining and analyses.

After this workshop participants should be able to:

- Discuss a variety of applications and workflow approaches for next generation sequence technologies

- Submit, browse and access a range of NGS data available in public repositories

- Apply bioinformatics software and tools for analysis of NGS data

- Appreciate advantages and limitations of NGS technologies and analyses approaches.
